Famous five join United millionaires Manchester United are close to finalising a 29million investment plan that will keep five of their brightest young stars at the club well into the next century. England World Cup players David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt are now engaged in talks to extend their contracts to the year 2003 while Gary Neville and brother Phil have already agreed to commit themselves to the club for the next seven years. As first revealed by Sportsmail, Butt, Scholes and Beckham wil be given huge pay rises. They had already signed until 2001 but are now in discussions to add a further two years to their deals. The negotiations mean all five join the growing band of Manchester United players earning 1million a season. Beckham already earns a further 1million-plus a year through sponsorship deals with Adidas and Brylcreem. But Scholes and Butt can at least rival their more glamourous colleague on the United pay scale and the rises for all five - which will total almost 15million - double their salaries. The new offers will also protect United from the head hunters of Italy and Spain, with Beckham known to be a long-term target for Juventus. Ryan Giggs agreed a five year deal until the year 2001 in 1996 and is already on a seven-figure salary - but the club are certain to begin further talks with him shortly. At the weekend, manager Alex Ferguson, 56, announced that he intends to continue work well into his 60s, while his No2 Brian Kidd also signed a new deal recently. United chairman Martin Edwards said 'We are in negotiations with Beckham, Scholes and Butt. The three of them signed deals two years ago until the year 2001 but they have come a long way since and we'd hate to lose them.' |
